Magazine Bowl

erratic_prophet | 23 April, 2006 22:46

So, like Kate, I was rather taken with the magazine bowl project featured on crafster.org and just had to try it. But I can never keep a simple project simple. No, I must twist it and distort it until it makes my life a living hell. Only then am I truly happy..

Ta-da! Ze bowl. Eet ees finished!
Ooooh! Look how big!

As you can see, it's of a decent size. I used two whole-- or mostly whole-- magazines to make it. But-- as you can also see-- the strips are a lot narrower than the crafster project. This is where my hell started...

I didn't like the look of the larger strips. I felt they looked too bulky and didn't stay smooth when wound around. There were too many gaps. So I cut each page into three equal strips and then folded each strip in half, length-wise, twice. The strips then came to maybe about 1/2" in height (or a smidge over a centimeter for you metric folks).

Those I wound around and taped. When I was done, I kept the shape by placing my bowl into a similarly shaped bowl where I Mod Podged* it and let it dry. When that side dried, I flipped it and set it over a smaller bowl-- again, to help keep the shape-- and Mod Podged that side and left it to dry. What you see is the glittery goodness left behind when the Mod Podge dried. Not that you can really see the glitter..

*Mod Podge is a waterbased sealer, glue and finish use in craft projects. It is the awesomeness. Get some.

Kate- I kicked my own ass on that one, I think..

Dee- Get in line. I'm already being forced to make one for one family member and I'm sure it won't stop there.

J- My comment on the previous post disappeared, so I think something strange is afoot.

Michelle- Hehehe! It was done partly at work-- no sale means that I sit there and do nothing all night-- and while watching tv before bed over several weeks with my father asking, every time he saw it, "What is that?"
